The Applied Karate series covers the information, techniques and training methods that karate practitioners - and exponents of similar systems - need to be familiar with if they are to practise their art as a practical fighting system.

These DVDs explain in detail the practical use of many misunderstood techniques in addition to covering the changes that need to be made to common training methods in order to practise karate as an effective system with genuine relevance to live situations.

Applied Karate Volume 1: Punches, Hand-Strikes and Limb-Control includes detailed instruction on:

• Close-range punching

• Power generation

• The practical reason for the hands coming to the hip

• The frequently misunderstood and ignored lessons of kata

• The role of a 'guard' (where should the hands be held?)

• Bringing underused karate punching techniques back onto the syllabus

• The use of open-hand strikes

• The use of impact equipment

• Combination punching

• Controlling the opponent's limbs to create openings

• Freeing your limbs from an opponent's grip

• Punching drills, and more!

Running Time: 70 Mins Approx.

Fighter's Magazine Review by Matt Sylvester:

"If you're a Karateka and have not managed to hear about Iain Abernethy, then you've either had your head in the sand or you're deaf, dumb and blind.

Iain has produced some of the best Karate-related media on the market and has consistently delivered and marketed it in a clean and easy way to use. This makes the products not only something valuable to your training but also contributes to an impressive looking training library.

Validation and inspiration are the two words that spring to mind when watching Iain teach on his DVDs. I use teach deliberately. He's not presenting a product, he's teaching the viewer the techniques that he applies on a daily basis. This is clear in his unguarded enthusiasm and the energy he puts in to the techniques that he's demonstrating. In fact the only criticism I might have is that he pause for breath on the odd occasion!

The techniques themselves can be applied throughout a broad spectrum of styles both within Karate and even Tae Kwon Do and require a low level of understanding. This is both due to the way that they are taught by Iain and also because they are broken down into clearly understandable sections.

Stick this onto a laptop, take it into your training hall and you are ready to start training. It's that well taught. Go and get it. Get your partner to buy it. Get it. Until Volume 2 comes out, this is the best DVD on the market for this genre. Overall score: 92%."
